The number of people to have signed up to a Back Heathrow campaign in support of expanding the airport has reached 100,000.

The campaign launched in 2013 and organisers claim it has become one of the fastest-growing in the UK.

Its promotional material proclaiming 50,000 supporters has become a familiar sight, with advertisements placed in regional newspapers.

The organisation marked its new milestone with a new promotional shot, showing residents who support expansion proposals.

Campaign co-ordinator Rob Gray said: "I am delighted but not surprised that 100,000 residents in communities around Heathrow have joined us to back expansion at the UK’s only hub airport.

"The majority of local people know this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create thousands of jobs and apprenticeships while helping smash youth unemployment in the boroughs closest to Heathrow.

"If the Airports Commission recommends Heathrow expansion, the new government has a moral duty to step up to the plate and help get the job done."

The Airports Commission has been tasked with deciding whether to expand Heathrow Airport or Gatwick Airport in order to increase flight capacity in south-east England.

The two expansion options for Heathrow Airport are building a third runway and – in what is known as the Heathrow Hub plan – extending an existing one.

A recommendation is due in June.

Those against Heathrow’s proposed expansion have previously accused Back Heathrow of scaremongering in order to gain support, which the group denies doing.

Anti-expansion groups say building a third runway or hub would involve demolishing homes, destroying community buildings and public spaces, and creating added pollution and noise.
