US RULING ON BOMBARDIER RISKS THOUSANDS OF UK JOBS, CLAIMS UNION

The Prime Minister has been accused of being "asleep at the wheel" after the US slapped a punitive import duty on planes made by one of Northern Ireland's biggest employers.

Unions have warned that thousands of jobs could be in jeopardy after the US Department of Commerce (DoC) imposed an interim tariff of nearly 220% on a new model of passenger jet manufactured by Bombardier.

More than 4,000 people are employed in Belfast by the Canadian multinational and thousands more jobs in Northern Ireland are supported through the manufacturer's supply chain, according to trade unionists.

GRENFELL TRAGEDY WAS PRODUCT OF 'BRUTAL' SYSTEM OF INEQUALITY, SAYS CORBYN

Grenfell Tower stands as a symbol of a failed political system which has held sway in Britain for the past three decades and which Labour will replace, Jeremy Corbyn is set to declare.

In his keynote speech to Labour's conference in Brighton, Mr Corbyn will say that the fire in which around 80 people perished in west London in June was the product of a "brutal" system of rampant inequality, hollowed-out public services and disdain for the powerless and the poor.

And he will say that Labour is now a government-in-waiting ready to implement a programme to put power in the hands of ordinary people and offer them a share in the benefits from accelerating technological change.

POST-BREXIT BRITAIN SHOULD BE LEADING AGITATOR FOR FREE TRADE - BORIS JOHNSON

Britain should become "the world's leading proselytiser and agitator for free trade" when it leaves the European Union, Boris Johnson has said.

The Foreign Secretary was speaking ahead of the launch in London of a new think tank designed to make the case for free trade.

He is being joined at Friday's launch of the Institute for Free Trade at the Foreign Office by fellow Cabinet Brexiteer Liam Fox, who said there were "huge opportunities" for Britain in taking the message to emerging economies of the power of free trade to lift people out of poverty.

CONSULTING SPECIALIST DOCTORS COULD EXTEND LIVES OF BOWEL CANCER PATIENTS

Some patients with bowel cancer are being denied life-saving surgery and are given end-of-life care instead, according to a new report.

The study, from the charity Bowel Cancer UK, found that specialist doctors who could operate are being shut out of decisions on care, which then condemns patients to having palliative chemotherapy.

More than 41,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year in the UK, with around a quarter of those (10,000 people) diagnosed at late stage 4.

FUTURE OF GRENFELL TOWER MANAGEMENT BODY 'HANGING BY A THREAD'

The future of the organisation responsible for managing Grenfell Tower is hanging by a thread, with councillors due to discuss whether to strip it of all housing responsibility.

Residents have repeatedly called for an end to the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (TMO), amid accusations that it breached its duty of care by ignoring residents' complaints, failing to carry out repairs and its response to the fire.

Six weeks after the fire, interim chief executive Elaine Elkington drew criticism by failing to reference Grenfell in her first statement, while further fury was provoked when it emerged that her predecessor Robert Black, who stood aside to assist the public inquiry, was still on the payroll receiving a reported six-figure sum.

The action - "multiple claimants v Paterson" and others - is listed "for mention" before the judge, following the recent announcement of the fund.

DONALD TRUMP PLANS TO SLASH NUMBER OF REFUGEE ADMISSIONS INTO THE UNITED STATES

The Trump administration will allow no more than 45,000 refugees into the United States next year officials said on Tuesday, in what would be the lowest admissions level in more than a decade.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce the cap on refugee admissions following a lengthy debate within his administration about where to set the number.

The figure represents the maximum number of refugees the US would be willing to accept and the actual number of refugees who move to the United States could actually be much lower.

CONSTRUCTION STARTS ON MODELS OF PROPOSED US-MEXICO BORDER WALL

Federal contractors have started to build prototypes of US President Donald Trump's proposed border wall with Mexico.

Construction of eight models in a remote area of San Diego is about three months behind schedule after being held up by losing bidders whose protests were eventually denied.

A green tarpaulin hanging on a chain-link fence blocked views of the work, which is expected to last 30 days.
