The government has confirmed the increase in the cost of an annual TV licence fee.

As of April 1 2017, the cost will increase from £145.50 to £147, making it the first rise in seven years.

The government is responsible for setting the level of the licence fee and announced last year that it would rise in line with inflation for five years from April 1 2017.

What do I need to do?

Do not worry, licence fee payers will receive notification reflecting the new amount, when their licence is next due for renewal.

If you have bought a licence on an instalment scheme which started before April 1, for example, monthly direct debits or weekly payments, you will continue to pay the same price, totalling £145.50, until the licence comes up for renewal.

A spokesman for TV Licensing in London and the South East, Ben Craig said: "The free concession for those aged over 75 remains, although as at present this is not issued automatically, and anyone entitled to the concession must apply for it.

"If you are blind (severely sight impaired) you are entitled to a 50 % concession on the cost of a TV Licence. From 1 April 2017, this amount will be £73.50.

“TV Licensing provides a range of ways to pay, including small weekly cash payments and annual Direct Debit.

"Payers can view their details on line at any time, and can choose to receive correspondence from TV Licensing by email, rather than by post."

Do I need a TV licence?

Anyone watching or recording programmes as they are shown on television, or watching or downloading programmes from BBC iPlayer must have a television licence.

This applies for any device you may be watching or downloading the programme from.

If you are watching on demand from channels other than the BBC or watching from a site like Netflix, you do not need a television licence.
