"Storm Dylan" could be officially named over the festive period, bringing strong winds and travel disruption to Britain.

White Christmas chances are thawing as forecasters predict 60mph gales could attack during Christmas and the New Year.

Festive travellers are warned to check the forecast before taking long journeys and listen to any warnings.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “Storm Dylan has potential to be named over the Christmas period.

Dylan would be another storm the country has faced this year, including Aileen on September 12-13, Brian on October 21 and Caroline on December 7.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “It’s the worst possible time for stormy conditions to hit, affecting some of the year’s major leisure travel days immediately before Christmas.”

Temperatures of up to 16C were forecast by ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond, as well as The Weather Outlook.

Ladbrokes cut odds to 3/1 on Christmas Day being the warmest ever, beating the record 15.6C set in Edinburgh in 1896 and Devon in 1920.

They said: “The chances of a White Christmas are thawing.”

The Met Office said it had not discussed naming a storm, but told travellers to check for updated weather warnings.

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson said: “After the cold spell, a very mild 15C could be seen by Tuesday in south west England from far south in the Atlantic arrives.

“There’s potential for the south to turn windier from Christmas Eve. A named storm has not been mentioned in briefings. But we could see windy weather for all of the UK at times up to New Year’s Day."

Government forecasters said all parts of the country are set to see further strong winds after Christmas Day until New Year’s Day.

Britain risks a repeat of some of the Christmas Eve storm chaos which hit the past two years.
