The Royal Mint is releasing a commemorative coin for Christmas, and it has a traditional festive theme.

It features a fir Christmas tree, decorated with baubles and lights, as well as a star on the top.

The silver £5 coin will be available to buy from Monday, October 9 on the official Royal Mint site.

Of the new coin, The Royal Mint said: "It showcases one of the most iconic symbols of the festive period - the Christmas Tree.

"It plays a key role in many people’s festive traditions and all the events that surround it – from decorating the tree with family, to opening presents around it on Christmas day."

Each coin will cost £13 and was designed by artist Edwina Ellis. The £5 coin will be posted to customers along with a greeting and an envelope - making it an ideal Christmas gift for keen collectors.

2017 marks the second year that The Royal Mint has struck an official Christmas coin. The first one was released last year and featured the Christmas Nativity.

It was designed by Bishop Gregory Cameron - who also created the design for the round pound - and only 30,000 were struck.

The Royal Mint says: "Christmas is a time for giving, so it's not surprising that the connection between coins and Christmas has a very long history. The tradition of giving presents at Christmas began with the Three Magi bringing Jesus Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh."
