If you've ever been hit with a unexpectedly high phone bill you will be familiar with the feelings of dread and worry it can cause.

Most users have no idea that they are over their contracted amount until it's too late.

Well now, thanks to a new law that was passed yesterday, this is set to change.

All mobile providers in the UK will soon have to offer customers the option to set a monthly cap on their contracts.

This means you will have the option to create a cap on your bills - so if you go over this you will be informed.

It comes as the government wants to try and stop customers unwittingly running up high charges then struggling to pay them off.

When a customer has reached the limit they will not be able to make calls, send messages or use mobile data.

They will then be contacted by the service provider and given the option to buy additional data and usage.

The new law is included in the Digital Economy Bill and was passed after it was given the Royal Assent but will not come into force until after the coming General Election.

Under the new law mobile providers are required to contact users on a monthly contract and make them aware of the change.

Before the law was created only a few providers offered a bill cap option and some customers were left guessing if they had overspent.

Telecom operators Ofcom is in charge of enforcing the new change and if a mobile provider is found not complying with it they could be fined.

Once a new government has been elected - after the General Election on June, 8th - it will then be decided what date the new law will come into force.
