PSA GROUP TO BUY VAUXHALL IN £1.9BN DEAL FOR GM'S EUROPEAN OPERATIONS

French car giant PSA Group is to buy the European operations of General Motors, including Vauxhall in the UK, for £1.9 billion.

The announcement ends weeks of speculation about the deal and its impact on thousands of jobs at Vauxhall plants in Ellesmere Port and Luton.

Unite called for assurances over the long-term future of the UK factories.

Security services have thwarted 13 potential terrorist attacks on the UK in less than four years and are running more than 500 live investigations at any time, Britain's most senior counter-terrorism officer has revealed.

Assistant commissioner Mark Rowley disclosed the figures as he launched a major appeal for the public to report any suspicions and act on their instincts, saying their help is critical to foiling atrocities.

The Metropolitan Police officer told the Press Association that since June 2013, police and intelligence agencies have disrupted 13 terrorist attack plots.

Chancellor Philip Hammond has signalled he will prioritise building up a Brexit safety net fund ahead of launching a spending spree in Wednesday's Budget.

Facing opposition calls to use an unexpected rise in tax receipts to pump more money into services and infrastructure, Mr Hammond made it clear he wanted to ensure the country had enough resources in reserve to cope with any Brexit turbulence over the next two years.

Amid reports that he was planning to raise some taxes in the Budget rather than loosen public purse strings, the Chancellor stressed the need for caution as the UK prepared to trigger two years of testing Brexit negotiations with the EU by invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

Jeremy Corbyn has insisted there is ''nothing missing, nothing hidden'' in his tax affairs as Labour rejected allegations he failed to declare £40,000 of income.

The party said it was confident the details of Mr Corbyn's tax return were in order after the leader faced questions over his earnings.

Details released on the Labour leader's website on Sunday said he earned £114,342 in 2015/16, on which he paid £35,298 in tax.

Families touched by the Zeebrugge ferry disaster will gather at a church service to mark the 30th anniversary of the tragedy that claimed 193 lives.

At about 6pm on March 6 1987, the Townsend Thoresen roll-on, roll-off ferry The Herald Of Free Enterprise turned over on its side outside Zeebrugge, Belgium, as it set out for Dover, Kent.

Heroics by crew and passengers led to the majority of those on board surviving, but more than 150 passengers and nearly 40 crew on the British-flagged vessel perished.

MAN DUE IN COURT ACCUSED OF KILLING PENSIONER WHOSE BODY WAS FOUND AT ALLOTMENT

A man will appear in court charged with the murder of an 80-year-old woman whose body was found in a garage at an allotment.

Rahim Mohammadi, 40, of Goldsmith Row, east London, was charged on Sunday with the murder of Lea Adri-Soejoko, the Metropolitan Police said.

The pensioner's body was discovered on Tuesday in Colindale, north-west London, in a lock-up store at the allotment where she was secretary.

A former British Army officer has been shot dead in Kenya.

Tristan Voorspuy was killed by pastoral herders on Sunday while inspecting some of his lodges, a local police official told the Associated Press.

Mr Voorspuy, who spent six years in the Army from the mid 1970s, including two as a cavalry officer, was the founder of luxury adventure safari company Offbeat Safaris.

A bid to make it illegal for companies to require women to wear high heels at work will be debated by MPs in Parliament later.

More than 150,000 people signed an e-petition calling on ministers to outlaw such workplace dress code rules so women can wear flat, formal shoes.

The petition, which labels current formal work dress codes as "out-dated and sexist", will be discussed in Westminster Hall.
