PARIS KILLERS USED REFUGEE CHAOS TO ENTER FRANCE - PM

Members of the terrorist cell which carried out the attacks in Paris took advantage of the refugee crisis to "slip in" to France, according to the country's prime minister.

Manuel Valls said the EU's passport-free zone - under the Schengen agreement - would be "undermined" if Europe did not tighten security at its external borders.

And he warned authorities were unsure if there were any other groups or individual jihadists "still active", adding the terror threat would be "long and permanent".

POLICE OFFICERS WARN AGAINST CUTS AFTER PARIS TERROR ATTACKS

Cuts to officer numbers will "severely impact" on the ability of the police to deal with a Paris-style attack, the Home Secretary has been warned.

In a letter sent to Mrs May following the atrocity, senior police officers said that mainstream policing is crucial in tackling terrorism.

Shadow Home Secretary Andy Burnham has issued a fresh warning against imposing swingeing cuts on police forces as the government finalises the details of next week's spending review, which is set to squeeze budgets further.

A Libyan man remains in custody for questioning over a conspiracy to murder Pc Yvonne Fletcher more than 31 years after she was shot dead.

The suspect in his 50s was detained by counter-terrorism officers in south-east England in what police described as a "significant turning point" in the inquiry into the death of the officer, who was gunned down aged 25 during a protest outside the Libyan embassy in London in April 1984.

In addition to conspiracy to murder, the man was arrested on suspicion of money laundering.

More than 6,000 people have died while waiting for an organ transplant in the last decade, the NHS revealed as it launched a campaign to boost the number of UK residents on the organ donor register.

According to new NHS figures, nearly 49,000 people have waited for an organ transplant during that period and there are about 7,000 currently on the list.

SEVEN-MONTH-OLD CRIMINAL COURTS CHARGES SHOULD BE AXED - MPS

A cross-party committee of MPs has called for the immediate abolition of new criminal courts charges, just seven months after their introduction.

The House of Commons Justice Committee voiced "grave misgivings" over the mandatory charge, which was often "grossly disproportionate" both to the seriousness of the crime committed and the ability of offenders to pay.

The prospect of a levy of as much as £1,200 if a case goes to trial created "perverse incentives" for innocent people to plead guilty in order to avoid the risk of a big bill, the committee said.

MPS CONDEMN 'STAGGERING' RAIL ELECTRIFICATION COST INCREASES

MPs have raised severe concerns about rail investment in the UK and called for a "fundamental review" of the industry's regulator.

The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) described cost increases on Network Rail's (NR) electrification of the Great Western railway line between London and south Wales as "staggering and unacceptable".

It also found there is "far too much uncertainty" over costs and delivery dates for electrification of the Midland Mainline from Sheffield to Bedford and the TransPennine line between Manchester and York.

Tom Watson has said he will write to the widow of Leon Brittan to apologise directly after he was criticised by MPs for repeating a claim that he was "as close to evil as any human could get" in connection with sex abuse allegations against the Tory peer.

The campaigning Labour deputy leader was accused of acting inappropriately over his reference to the words of an alleged sex abuse survivor in a newspaper article following the late politician's death.

Scotland Yard was also attacked over "errors of judgment" in the case in a scathing report by the Commons Home Affairs Committee.
