Surprise, surprise, the M25 has been named as the slowest motorway in the UK.

Speeds on the slowest motorway in Britain average at just 25mph, which is almost half the average speed of the M602, which came tenth, a new report by vehicles tracking company Satrak has revealed.

The 117-mile orbital motorway took the top spot, which will come as no surprise for the motorists caught up in the tailbacks on a daily basis .

Dan Walton, managing director of Satrak Vehicle Tracking, said: “It’s little surprise to find that the M25 is in fact the slowest motorway. We undertake work throughout the country and usually find the M25 to be the most cumbersome, and our data provides evidence for that.

“I’ve heard of tailbacks stretching 12 miles in my time there so it’s of little surprise to me. It’s nice to see that people are taking care in many of our cities however, as these places are often busy and above all are not environments for speeding.”

The M3 came ninth, with an average speed of 46mph, which may be surprising as the motorway is currently undergoing major roadworks, to convert it into a smart motorway, with a 50mph speed limit in place.

The M23 did not feature in the top 10 slowest motorway and instead came 17th, with speeds averaging at an 53.76mph.

Data from 527,000 vehicles over the period of last year (2016) has been analysed and the most sluggish motorways have been highlighted using average speeds of the vehicles using them.

It would take a vehicle nearly five hours to travel just 117 miles on the M25 - the equivalent of a plane travelling from London to Turkey or Greece.

Cambridge was found to be the slowest city in Britain, and London took the third spot, with average temperatures at just 14mph.

None of the top ten slowest cities exceeded 20mph.
