Gatwick Airport was thrown into "chaos" on Friday morning (May 26) as passengers had the option of getting off their plan or flying without their luggage.

Flyers described long queues at the airport, with one person tweeting that the experience had "ruined" his three day anniversary.

The airport also confirmed that "some flights are departing without bags" and said they would be "sent on as soon as possible."

Gatwick took to social media to apologise to passengers and say that there was an "issue" with their baggage sytem.

The baggage problems came as families began to jet off for the bank holiday weekend and half-term got under way.

All airlines and both terminals were affected and at 9.21am on Friday, the airline said it did not know how long the problems were going to continue.

Multiple people described the airport in "chaos", with Sarah Perkins tweeting: "After long delays on the ground we are now taking off... but without some bags utter chaos."

Passengers also reported missing flights due to the mammoth queues with one group of 16 stuck at the airport as they tried to leave for a stag do.

The airport confirmed shortly before 11am the incident had been resolved but warned passengers to expect knock-on delays due to the backlog.
