Millions of viewers held their breath as the EastEnders murder mystery reached its conclusion, but one screamed so loudly during the tense episode that neighbours called the police.

The woman's shriek came before Bobby Beale, Lucy's half-brother, was unmasked as her murderer in a shock finale to one of the show's most hyped storylines.

Describing the incident on Twitter, Sergeant Richard Berns, of the Brownswood ward in Hackney, east London, assumed the scream rang out at the moment of revelation.

He wrote: "A woman screamed so loudly after the identity of Lucy Beale's killer was revealed [that] her neighbours called the police. All calm now ..."

Fans responding to his tweet pointed out that in fact the true killer had not yet been unveiled.

There was a red herring moment during the episode which appeared to suggest that Jane Beale may have been responsible for Lucy's death.

One viewer wrote: "She will scream again soon after the 9.25pm twist. Good luck !"

Mr Berns said: "Then she screamed for nothing?"
