There are some big changes in store for smokers and vapers this weekend.

The new laws were first announced by Philip Hammond in his Spring Budget in March this year.

Here is everything you need to know.

What are the new vaping changes?

If you vape you need to know about the new requirements

From today, Saturday, May 20 there will be new vaping requirements stores and online retailers must follow.

Big refills and tanks will no longer be available and some ingredients used in the e-liquids will be illegal. There must also be a 30% health warning on the front and back reading: "This product contains nicotine which is a highly addictive substance."

The regulations are part of the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016.

The new requirements are:

  • restrict e-cigarette tanks to a capacity of no more than 2ml
  • restrict the maximum volume of e-liquid for sale in one refill container to 10ml
  • restrict e-liquids to a a nicotine strength of no more than 20mg/ml
  • require nicotine-containing products or their packaging to be child-resistant and tamper evident
  • ban certain ingredients including colourings, caffeine and taurine
  • include new labelling requirements and warnings
  • require all e-cigarettes and e-liquids be notified to the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) before they can be sold

Anyone who is caught not complying with the new laws could be jailed for up to two years or face a fine.

People who have taken up vaping in a bid to give up cigarettes might struggle with the new nicotine strength requirements.

This is because they rely on the higher nicotine strengths to satisfy their cravings.

What are the new cigarette changes?

10 packs of cigarettes are now a thing of the past

The shake up is being implemented to discourage people from the habit - especially the young.

The regulations became law this time last year but companies have had 12 months to sell old stock and fully implement the changes.

An end to 10 packs

Packs of 10 cigarettes will no longer be available to buy in stores across the country from today Saturday, May 20.

Packets containing 20 cigarettes are now the smallest size available to buy.

And the cheapest packet will cost £8.82.

Standardised packaging

You might have already seen the new standardised packaging that has slowly been entering stores

Standardised packaging regulations, which is a UK initiative, comes into full effect tomorrow, Sunday May 21.

Cigarettes will be sold in plain packaging with a graphic health warning on the front. All packs will be a dull green colour and will not feature a company logo.

The health warning must also cover 65% of the front and back.

What are the new tobacco changes?

Along with ten packs of cigarettes, small pouches of tobacco - those of 10g and 20g - will no longer be available to buy from today Saturday, May 20.

The smallest pouch available will be 30g.

Menthols

Menthol cigarettes are being phased out and will be completely taken off the shelves by May 2020.

Flavoured cigarettes or tobacco, including fruit, spice, herbs, alcohol, candy and vanilla will also be phased out.
