On June 23 the public will head to the voting booths with the simple question - should the country remain in the EU?

But what do the political figures in Ealing and their parties think? Getwestlondon has rounded up their opinion.

We approached Labour, Liberal Democrats and UKIP members, yet all Conservative councillors getwestlondon approached have declined to offer opinion.

Labour MP Stephen Pound, who represents Ealing North: REMAIN

"I’ll be enthusiastically voting Remain; not just because of the huge economic benefits that our access to the market gives us, not just because the next seven Parliamentary years would be spent negotiating withdrawal.

"And not only because of the stability and security and the longest period of European peace but because if the UK were to leave then the consequences for Europe could be disastrous with the real possibility of the Union shattering."

Alex Nieora, UKIP representative and former Greater London Assembly candidate for Ealing and Hillingdon: LEAVE

UKIP's Alex Nieora was pleased with his parties third place finish

"No other set of countries in the world pay £8.5bn a year to abrogate their sovereignty, democracy and self determination to a centralised body controlled by corporates and investment banks for free trade which elsewhere comes no strings attached.

"We should be proud of our country – British law provides far higher minimum pay, longer maternity leave and holiday entitlement and greater equality than EU law requires.

"Conversely, the EU increases wealth inequality through corporate protectionism and discrimination against people and businesses from outside the EU."

Cllr Julian Bell, leader of Labour Ealing Council: REMAIN

"For the future economic prosperity of Britain and London it is critical we remain in the EU.

"Having unfettered access to a market of 500m people supports 3 million jobs, means lower prices for families and a strong economy to support the NHS.

"A vote to remain will protect workers rights including paid leave, parental rights, holidays and anti-discrimination laws. It also guarantees the European Arrest Warrant that is vital in the pan Europe fight against crime and terrorism."

"The EU is also a bulwark of peace and democracy. Why throw all this away?"

Rupa Huq MP, who represents Ealing Central and Acton: REMAIN

MP Rupa Huq led the debate in the House of Commons on Monday

"I am in favour of remaining in Europe. The economic arguments are compelling – Europe is our biggest trading partner we can deal with tariff-free and we would risk British jobs to leave.

"We also live in a globalised interdependent world where any major nation state needs to forge international alliances with NATO, the UN and EU to be a serious player rather than going it alone.

"European legislation has also guaranteed us worker’s rights and cheaper prices and we need global solutions to the challenges of climate change and international crime."

Liberal Democrat group leader Cllr Gary Malcolm, who represents the Southfield ward: REMAIN

Councillor Gary Malcolm, who wants to see money made from cannabis sales taken out of the black market and into the British economy

"Staying IN means we would safe-guard our rights like paid holidays, maternity leave and maximum working hours.

"We would be safer as criminals can now be easily deported using the European arrest warrant.

"Being part of the EU gives all British companies free access to the rest of Europe which allows them to grow and employ more people, making us all wealthier. Leaving the EU would put a huge number of jobs at risk."
