We've been on the new Crossrail trains and they are pretty cool.

By pretty cool, we mean lighter, bigger, faster, longer and more high tech as well as being much more accessible.

You'll ride on trains that will be 200m long and able to carry 1,500 people at speeds of up to 90mph.

The walk-through trains, just like on the Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines, will have "metro" seating on both sides of the train plus four-seat bays.

On board, you will have free wi-fi access throughout your journey, not just on platforms, as well as 4G signal.

The train information screens will show real time location and timings for the journey as well as the usual information, to help you plan your journey more easily.

The train we boarded was nice and new and TfL said the materials and colours they have chosen will avoid the train looking fatigued but added that they will wear in, rather than wear out.

Thought has also been given to accessibility, with larger, more open doorways to aid access as well as dark floors and brushed steel contrast, which will aid passengers with little or limited sight.

The trains are lighter and faster than we're used to

There are also dedicated wheelchair bays and separate areas to store strollers and luggage, which is important given the train will stop at all Heathrow terminal stations.

Getting a seat on your morning commute might still be tough but luckily, the grab bars have been redesigned to be much more comfortable to hold.

If you do get a seat, there should be no awkwardness as the armrests are split into two tiers, so you can both rest your elbows without starting a turf war.

No more turn wars over elbow space

If you'd like to try the train for yourself, you can go to Liverpool Street, where they are operating on the TfL Rail route to Shenfield.

If not, west London will be receiving its own fleet when TfL rail starts operating the route between Heathrow and London Paddington in May 2018.

From December 2018, it will be rebranded the Elizabeth Line and run from Heathrow to Paddington, Paddington to Abbey Wood and Liverpool Street to Shenfield.

The Elizabeth Line will run in full from Reading to Shenfield from May 2019.
