Around 150 people were evacuated from a Hayes flat fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning (December 1).

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers attended a flat blaze on Station Road, Hayes at 2.28am; the fire was under control by 4.01am. Fire crews from Hayes, Heathrow, Hillingdon and Southall fire stations were at the scene.

Part of the flat on the fourth floor was damaged by fire. One person left the flat before the Brigade arrived thanks to their smoke alarm sounding. He was suffering from smoke inhalation and treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews. Around 150 people from surrounding flats also self evacuated.

Station manager, Lucy Macleod, said: "The smoke alarm came to the rescue yet again and alerted the resident to the fire. Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have those linked together.

"This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home, especially in the early hours of the morning. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

"Living in a flat is not more dangerous than living in a house, but it's important to know what your fire plan is and how you'd escape if a fire did break out."
