This is ‘a true all-weather sports saloon’, according to Jaguar. The forthcoming XE will have the option of all-wheel drive if you buy the 2.0-litre, 178bhp Ingenium turbodiesel version. This is not some weedy add-on, it’s the same system Jaguar use not only in the XF but also in the forthcoming F-Pace, Jaguar’s first SUV.

It can pump torque to the front as well as the rear, and works with the eight-speed automatic gearbox only. It also interacts with the Intelligent Driving Dynamics software, which is already installed on the F-Type all-wheel drive model.

Keeping up the acronyms, there is also the optional Adaptive Surface Response system which adjusts everything from throttle to stability control to ensure the best response to whatever is under the wheels. So, whatever the driver gets up to, the Jaguar has it covered for making decisions on what wheels get what drive with whatever else is required to keep the car tracking true, even if conditions deteriorate badly.

Inside, the driver, who now has fewer decisions to make, can play with a new 10.2in infotainment system. The InControl Touch Pro is fully customisable and also operates as a wi-fi hotspot. If the driver isn’t even in the car, he or she can now play with an app on their Apple Watch so they can start the car remotely and check things like fuel level or climate control settings. Should you wish to do these things.

The car can be ordered now, with prices starting at £26,990, and with deliveries due for early 2016.
