If you want a car that will deliver on just about every normal motoring need, the Skoda Fabia is a great bet. It was What Car?’s Car of the Year for 2015, despite being up against seriously talented rivals like the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo. The Fabia’s fine drive, roomy cabin and simple controls got it over the line.
It’s a five-star car, and it’s now available online for £2400 under the list price. The broker deal we’ve found is on the 1.4 TDI SE, a grunty diesel that’s definitely worth considering against the more common petrol choice, especially if a big part of your driving is done on the motorway.
Space is more than ample for both front and rear passengers and the Fabia has one of the biggest boots in the supermini class.
For pure driving fun the Ford Fiesta beats the Fabia, but not by much. The Skoda’s suspension is a little compromised and noisy, but the upside is secure handling, light steering and no shortage of grip. You’ll notice some wind and road noise on the motorway, but that’s the case with just about every small car on the market.
Every Fabia model has a 6.5in infotainment screen linking to digital DAB radio and Bluetooth. The SE version here also gives you control over your smartphone through the MirrorLink connectivity tool, but it won’t include the centre armrest that top-spec models get. It's a good option at £95.
