The standard Q5 is a pretty impressive SUV as it is, and the sportier SQ5 even more so. So it’s interesting to see what additions Audi has made in order to enhance the new SQ5 Plus version’s price by a hefty £6370.

Changes include an intelligent active rear diff and claimed lowered stance, as well as an extra 14bhp (with 20bhp temporarily available on overboost) and 37lb ft of torque. There are further styling boosts such as new 21in alloys on the outside and diamond-stitched Nappa leather seats on the inside, and improved kit includes sat-nav, parking sensors and metallic paint.

It all adds style and panache to an already impressive-handling and -performing car, but it is enough to justify the price rise? On the road, we struggled to define the difference between this and the standard SQ5. The extra power and torque – which has been achieved by tweaking the turbos – don’t translate into quicker sprint times. This isn’t helped by an occasionally tardy eight-speed auto transmission.

Also, the claimed 30mm-lower suspension is actually the same as before – which means the handling is equally accomplished and the ride just as comfortable. While that’s all very nice, it’s not exactly anything new.

The artificial engine noise fed through an exhaust speaker in Dynamic mode sounds good, although we’d prefer the real thing. And the clever new diff has actually brought with it more understeer and less enjoyment or involvement.

We’re not saying that the new Audi SQ5 isn’t a solid performer, with strong acceleration and a plusher interior than before. It’s just that, on the road, it doesn’t feel like an additional £6000-plus over its standard stablemate. Four stars for effort, but not for achievement.
