Youngsters have called for more action on littering in their town centre.

Pupils from Botwell House, Dr Triplett’s and Minet Junior schools in Hayes were invited the Hillingdon Council chambers at the civic centre in High Street, Uxbridge, to give presentations on their perceptions about the local environment – and what should be done to improve it.

The event was part of the Cleaner and Greener Hayes project, aimed at cracking down on littering and fly-tipping, and promoting the area’s green spaces.

David Brough, chairman of the Hayes Town Partnership, praised the young people’s efforts.

“The children were an absolute inspiration and showed that not only did they care about the environment in their home town but that they also had lots of ideas on how to improve things in the future.

“We believe that the children of Hayes can become the ambassadors for a cleaner and greener town and that their example and energy will show the adults a thing or two.”

The children were grilled by a panel, which included the Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Michael Markham, environment champion, Councillor Sandra Jenkins, deputy chief executive Jean Palmer and experts from Brunel University and the Hillingdon Primary Care Trust (PCT), who have pledged to following the youngsters’ lead and take the necessary action.
