Police cadets from Hounslow and Richmond showed they have what it takes to become real cops by finishing second in a London-wide competition.

A team of 12 youngsters pitted their wits against 21 other cadet units last Saturday (12) in a variety of challenges including dealing with the aftermath of a serious car crash, applying first aid and orienteering.

The cadets, aged 14 to 19 and led by Joe Johnstone, came second in three of the seven tests at the Met's Police Recruits Training School in north London: the mock crash, an observation challenge and a fitness workout involving an inflatable assault course and paintballing.

PC Andy Bown, co-ordinator for the unit, said: "At a time when youths are appearing in the press for all the wrong reasons, it's great to see there are youngsters out there who are willing to make a difference."
