HOUNSLOW is the filmmakers' venue of choice when it comes to romance and period drama, a new online map of film locations suggests.

The borough has provided the backdrop to a number of iconic scenes in films, ranging from Oscar-winning romance The African Queen, released in 1951, to last year's The Young Victoria.

Seven sites in Hounslow are included in an interactive map, which Film London hopes will boost tourism across the capital.

The majority of these are listed buildings in the east of the borough, with four classed as 'romance', three as 'period' and one as 'horror'.

The African Queen, 1951 Starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, this epic romance was filmed at Worton Hall Studios, in Isleworth, shortly before they closed, though many scenes were shot on the River Ash, adjoining Shepperton Studios. Legend has it that escaped parakeets imported for the jungle scenes are responsible for today's booming population of the birds.

The Young Victoria, 2009 Osterley Park House stood in for Buckingham Palace in this historical drama starring Emily Blunt.

Miss Potter, 2006: The Butts, in Brentford, where some houses date back to the 1690s, is the 'star' of this Beatrix Potter biopic - along with Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor.

Emma, 1996: Ewan McGregor (Frank Churchill) reveals his feelings to Gwyneth Paltrow (Emma) at Syon House in Douglas MacGrath's adaptation of Jane Austen's classic romance. * Bend it Like Beckham, 2002 A young Keira Knightley gate-crashes a wedding at Gunnersbury Park Mansion in this popular Britflick, which was set in Hounslow and also starred future ER medic Parminder Nagra.

Dorian Gray, 2009: Ben Chaplin (Basil Hallward) paints the infamous portrait of the eponymous anti-hero at the neoclassical Chiswick Town Hall in Oliver Park's adaptation of Oscar Wilde's controversial novel.

Vanity Fair, 2004: The lake and gardens of Chiswick House, Lord Burlington's 18th-century Palladian villa, appear in Mira Nair's adaptation of Thackeray's satirical masterpiece, starring Reese Witherspoon.
