A First World War centenary service had to be postponed and a screening was cancelled at Brentford's Watermans arts centre as the remnants of former hurricane Bertha swept through Hounslow yesterday (Sunday, August 10).

Children were due to lay crosses at Brentford war memorial yesterday morning in memory of those killed during the conflict, which began 100 years ago.

However, due to the fierce wind and heavy rain forecast, organisers took the decision on Saturday to postpone the ceremony until Sunday, August 24, at 11am.

Meanwhile, the car park and projection room at Watermans , in Brentford High Street, was flooded on Sunday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the centre said a 2pm screening had to be cancelled but a live screening of La Traviata beamed from Glyndebourne was able to go ahead as planned later that afternoon.

She added that the venue was open as normal today and the Urban Ambush youth arts festival had not been affected.
