A CRAFTY group of enterprising women in Wembley are offering their hand made products at a new market.

The group World Women Wembley, which was set up out of Cottrell House, Wembley Hill Road, supports talented craftspeople in the area and will hold its first market on Mothers’ Day.

The first market will be held this Sunday  and it is hoped the event will blossom in to a community favourite and continue each month.

Jessica Courtney Bennett, project manager for Meanwhile Space at Cottrell House, said: “The World Women Wembley was an idea which came out of the community working space at Cottrell House. We provide the space for artists or people who wouldn’t necessarily otherwise be able to afford to rent somewhere and would have to work at home. There were quite a lot of women who came, people who hadn’t had their own professional space before. Before this they hadn’t thought of their craft or artwork as something which could be a viable business.”

Many women have been able to expand their business with the support of Cottrell House, which is run by Meanwhile Space, a project which manages empty properties in London and ensures they are used for the community.

One woman has been able to employ people to work for her at the space, and many invite clients there to speak to them in a more professional environment than they would have at home.

Miss Courtney Bennett said: “From these women using this space they thought they could see how many other people there were in Wembley who could expand what they do into a business. That’s how the market idea came about. Maybe not everyone was ready for their own exhibition or studio space or shop but had things they might want to try out and see if there is interest in them. Although the name is World Women Wembley we have more and more men being interested, it’s not just for women but we hope everyone will have the same ethos and has a craft or hobby they would like to share.”

She added: “When we found out the first would be on Mother’s Day we were really happy as it is a celebration of women. We are relatively small for a market but we want high quality home made goods and we want it to become a part of the community and something that people do on a Sunday in Wembley.”

There will be arts, prints, textiles, clothes and jewellery on offer at the market and if it is a success it will continue on the last Sunday of each month.
