Work is underway to build the much awaited new youth and community centre for the people of Hanworth.

A huge £50,000 grant was rewarded from The Veolia Environmetal Trust's landfill communities fund which paved the way for building work to begin this week.

The £240,000 New Dragon Centre project will be located next to St George's church, Castle Way in Hanworth Park, and is due to complete by spring next year.

Spearheading the project for a permanent new home for the youth centre are Reverend Paul Williamson and the Hanworth Park Preservation Trust.

Chairman of trustees, Father Williamson, said: “It is great that work has started this week.

"It has taken a lot of hard work to get to this point.

"The new centre will be a warm, welcoming focus for a wide range of activities for people of all ages and backgrounds and we cannot wait to see it complete.”

The new building will include two community rooms, storage, a kitchen, toilets, and area around the centre will be spruced up.

The original centre is located at the parish office on Blakewood Close since it began operating some 20 years.

During this period it has served local groups from beavers and scouts to youth running clubs, activity sessions such as arts and crafts and a computer club, to name a few.

Previous donations include a £5,000 fund from Segro.

During the planning stages almost 300 people sent in statements of support to Hounslow council.

Executive director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, Paul Taylor, added: “It is great to hear that this important project has started.

"The new centre will have a wide range of benefits for people of all ages. I look forward to seeing the completed building being used and enjoyed.”
