A woman aged 37 is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a road sign dislodged by alleged out-of-control car.

The pedestrian suffered the 'life-threatening injuries' in Wealdstone on Monday evening (June 30). The Metropolitan Police sealed off High Street following the incident outside Pizza Royal near the junction with Graham Road at 5.50pm.

A police spokesman said: "Initial reports suggest a black Ford Galaxy had mounted the kerb and collided with a traffic sign, which in turn struck the woman. The driver of the Ford Galaxy - a man - was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in custody at a northwest London police station."

The woman was flown by London Air Ambulance to The Royal Hospital in Whitechapel, east London, with serious unspecified injuries.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, based at Alperton Deployment Base, are investigating the collision and ask any witnesses to call 0208 991 9555.

It was the second big police incident of the day - after armed police were called out to a stand-off with a knife-wielding man in a house in nearby Headstone Lane in Harrow.
