A 56-year-old woman was killed, and a pensioner seriously injured by a falling tree branch which collapsed onto a pavement.

The police and the London Ambulance Service (LAS) were called to reports of a tree falling on a pavement and injuring two people at 4pm yesterday (Tuesday, June 10).

The LAS said they tried to resuscitate the woman but she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene near The Oaks estate in Donnington Road, Willesden. A 70 year-old man was also injured in the incident and rushed to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington with serious injuries.

The incident comes nearly two years after a New Zealand national from Hanwell was killed by a falling branch at Kew Gardens.

A Brent Council spokesman said: "This is a very sad situation and our thoughts are with the families and the victims of this tragic accident. At the moment we are unable to confirm the detail of what has happened; we will do so as soon as we receive further information."

The Metropolitan Police said: "We were called to reports of part of a tree collapsed on the pavement, two people received injuries."

One woman aged 56 was pronounced dead at the scene, her next of kin are aware. Inquires continue."

A spokesman for the LAS said: "We sent an air ambulance to the scene, but sadly despite the extensive effort to resuscitate the woman, she was pronounced dead at the scene, a man was also injured and taken to hospital."

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
