A BRENTFORD woman and her grandson watched in horror as their house burned down in front of them on Wednesday.

The woman and her son, an Isleworth and Syon School pupil, fled from the burning building in Walnut Tree Road, Brentford, just before 8am on March 28.

Four engines and 20 firefighters from Ealing, Chiswick, Heston and Park Royal arrived at 8.10am and brought the fire under control by 9.45am.

The grandmother and boy were treated by London Ambulance and did not need to go to hospital.

A fire spokesperson said: "It was quite a severe fire, the ground floor has been badly damaged and the whole of the first floor, stair case and roof were completely gutted."

A neighbour said: "It is a horrible thing to have happened, they have lost everything. But they are lucky no one was hurt, it could have so easily been a tragedy.

"Someone from the school came by to tell the boy he didn't need to worry about his school work but as you can imagine he is devastated, the whole family is."

A spokesperson from Hounslow Homes, who manage the property said: "The resident has elected to stay with a family member, in preference to the B&B we offered her.  We expect to move her to a permanent replacement home within the next few days and are considering additional practical support to help her through this traumatic period."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
