People in the community gathered to celebrate the completed road improvement design plans for the Wigley Road Community Streets project.

A street trial was held in Woodlawn Drive, Feltham, where residents were able to try out the proposals and give further feedback as well as see the final designs with coloured chalks and bales of hay used to demonstrate the traffic calming measures planned for the street.

Other fun included a smoothie bike to keep people hydrated and Dr Bike tuned bikes for free, at the event on March 29.

Gareth James, community engagement and transport initiatives officer for Hounslow council, said: "Unlike a lot of transport planning in the past this is a more organic approach to meet the needs and desires of residents.

"The Wigley Road area project, which began in July 2012, is the most recent project to have been funded through the programme (two of which have been completed).

"In response to residents' long-standing concerns that their community was increasingly being used as a cut-through route by commuters, with too much traffic going too fast through residential streets.

"We've been working to improve the road design and now we're at the business end of the project we organised a street trial on Saturday (March 29) in Woodlawn Drive to celebrate all the hard work by residents and give them a chance to see what the changes will look like."

The Community Streets programme, founded by TfL, was launched in 2009.

Hounslow Council has been working on the scheme with Sustrans and Hounslow Highways.

The scheme brings together urban designers and traffic engineers with members of the local community to address their needs.

The Wigley Road project designs are due to go to Area Forum for councillors’ approval in July or September.
