A West Drayton teenager who befriended an older boy with Down's Syndrome has been nominated for an award.
Fourteen year old George Gasson, who goes to The Wye Valley School in Bourne End, has been put forward for a Citygate Young People of The Year award which rewards youngsters who are positive role models.
George,of Walnut Avenue,West Drayton, was nominated by his teacher for the way he has helped fellow pupil, Jon Austin from Chalfont St Peter,Bucks, for the past four years.
George has always been there to help 15-year-old Jon, who has moderate learning difficulties, from registration in the morning, during lessons at lunch and in play.
Because of his condition, Jon occasionally gets upset, and this has resulted in him lashing out, including at his friend.
But that has not deterred George from continuing to support him.
George said: "I know that Jon has some difficulties and I just want to help him. Some people make fun of him but I tell them to back off.
"I don't get upset when he hits me. I stand by him. I get the teacher and we ask him why he did it. If I know why he's upset, I can help him."
