A WHITTON pupil has been given the stamp of approval by judges in a Royal Mail contest.

George Fernandes, from St Edmunds Catholic Primary School, was the regional winner in the Young Letter Writer Competition.

The 10-year-old's winning letter was inspired by Phillip Reeve's Larklight. In it he imagined being the sole survivor of a space crash and being rescued by aliens on a mission to track down an evil Galaxian Bull Worm.

He won a £50 book token, a framed certificate and a set of personalised 'Smilers' stamps featuring his favourite photo.

Vickey Windmill, also from St Edmunds, was named runner-up for her letter inspired by AA Milne's Winnie the Pooh. The 10-year-old wrote about a brief maritime adventure involving herself and the cartoon bear.
