WHITTON will get into patriotic spirit for St George’s Day this year with help from the Horse Rangers Band.

Although St George's Day is traditionally on April 23, which is a Monday this year, the festivities in Whitton will be taking place in the high street on Saturday 21 from 9am with a parade at 11am.

The Horse Rangers’ Riding for Disabled section will be holding a stall to raise much-needed funds for the two squadrons of youngsters who attend each week to learn about horse management.

Chelsea Pensioners will join regulars in the parade, including St George and his dragon, the Pearly King and Queen and the town cryer.

The parade will also include classic motorbikes and cars, military vehicles and Co-op dray horses, plus much more.

Entertainment throughout the day will include face-painting, children's rides, Morris dancing and a beer tent.

The Horse Rangers Association’s Director, Jackie Bryans, says “We’re proud to be taking part in Whitton’s recognition of England’s patron Saint. We hope that visitors will find out more about our charity and enjoy our Band."

The Horse Rangers Association (Hampton Court) is a charity youth organisation which provides nearly 400 places for young people, able-bodied and those with special needs, who wouldn’t otherwise have the means to learn about horse management.

Although this event is purely a celebration there is a growing campaign across England to mark St George’s Day as a Bank Holiday just like the Scots have with Saint Andrew's Day and Ireland with St Patrick’s Day.
