Objections to motorbike parking charges introduced in Westminster have been received from as far away as Australia.

Westminster Council has received almost 3,000 letters and emails in response to its trial of £1.50 daily charges for parking motorbikes in the borough.

Over the last six months residents were invited to voice their concerns, to be taken into account before a final decision on the scheme in April.

Around 6 per cent of the objections were from Westminster residents, with other letters sent from concerned bikers in countries including Holland, Italy, South Africa and even Australia.

Around 300 of the objections will be disregarded, as they were found to be duplicates.

Westminster Council's cabinet member for environment and transport Cllr Danny Chalkley said: "It's interesting to note that the vast majority of objections have come from motorcyclists who live outside Westminster and London, although their views of course carry equal weight as those living in the city."
