A Lisson Green Estate resident has branded her street a race track and called for urgent safety measures to be implemented.

Hilda Griffiths, a care worker who lives on the Lisson Green Estate in Westminster, said at resident's meeting last week that Rossmore Road was unsafe.

She claims the road, which runs through the estate, was a hazard to all pedestrians following works which were completed on it six years ago.

"Drivers come round the corner like it's Brands Hatch and you take your life in your hands if you try to cross there," she said.

"Cars fly through there and there are old people trying to cross. It's a danger to all, young and old."

A woman was killed by a taxi driver on Rossmore Road several years ago.

Ms Griffiths, 68, said many residents on the estate, which has 1,400 flats, had been asking for something to be done for years.

"There could be another accident if something isn't done," Ms Griffiths warned. "There has been talk about installing a pedestrian crossing here or maybe a round-about. Even a speed limit there would make a difference but something has to be done."

The council said it was no longer policy to install speed bumps because they increase the time taken by the emergency services to reach incidents and that they caused problems for ambulances transporting patients with spinal injuries.

However, council transport director Martin Low said he would take views on board.

"his is a busy road and we take concerns from the local community very seriously, and will of course look at the relevant accident data and at any proposals to ensure this road is made as safe as possible," he said.

"A pedestrian or zebra crossing or traffic island may help, and we recently installed a zebra crossing in Penfold Street after working closely with local people who had asked for it."
