A dummy that can cough, sweat, bleed and even speak is being used to train staff at the West Mid.

Using the £50,000 hi-tech mannequin, doctors and nurses at the Twickenham Road hospital will be able to experience 'real' scenarios such as a patient suffering acute breathing difficulties, in a safe and controlled situation.

Dr Serena Ayers, consultant in emergency medicine at the hospital, said: "We are extremely fortunate to have this piece of kit, which has been funded by the London Deanery.

"The simulator will allow us to replicate an almost limitless number of medical situations. This has huge potential for our medical and nursing trainees."

The dummy which has a beating heart, is technically known by his trade name of iStan but has been re-named Austin by hospital staff.
