Somewhat unsurprisingly west Londoners have some of the shortest commutes in the UK but new figures show they are using them wisely to help save the environment.

People working in Kensington and Chelsea travel just 8.7km to work on average and those in Hammersmith and Fulham travel 9.1km, a report from the ONS released on Wednesday says.

While the capital’s average is 11km and for England and Wales it is 15km, those in west London have some of the shortest journeys across the country.

It does not mean it’s a walk in the park for west Londoners though, in fact it’s more of a cycle, as both boroughs had a giant leap in people hopping on their bikes to get to work.

The statistics, just released from 2011’s census, showed the number of people cycling to work in Hammersmith and Fulham had risen by 80.2 per cent since 2001, while 73.8 per cent more were using pedal power in Kensington and Chelsea.

Islington, Lambeth and Hackney were still beating west Londoners in the cycle to work stakes.
