Reports of a bomb going off in Chelsea this afternoon (December 4) turned out to be a ‘run of the mill’ car fire.

Nobody was injured in the car blaze in busy Finborough Road but many witnessed the tyre exploding on one of west London’s main arteries at 1.20pm.

Witnesses took to Twitter with pictures of the explosion, with one tweeting: “A van just exploded in Chelsea #Bomb.”

A spokesman from London Fire Brigade described the tweet about a bomb as unhelpful and added: “There were misreports of a bomb going off. Lots of people heard an explosion which was the tyre bursting but firefighters have described the car fire as ‘run of the mill’ and nothing sinister.”

Fire crews had the fire, which destroyed the car, under control by 1.45pm. An investigation into the cause is underway.
