AS budgets are being squeezed, people are questioning why money was wasted marking out a road in West Acton which was scheduled for resurfacing works just weeks later.

Saxon Drive was marked out as a controlled parking zone a couple of months ago but the road is currently being dug up for resurfacing works, meaning the road will have to be marked out again.

One resident of Saxon Drive, said: "The Council's Highway department are now resurfacing the entire road and the markings will have to be done again. How's that for a waste of money when councils are being told to save it and why wasn't the CPZ delayed until after resurfacing?"

Councillor Gary Malcolm, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: "It makes sense to force officers and contractors to work together in the same period of time to ensure there is efficiency. This has gone on for years with some departments working on the same projects but unaware of what the other departments are doing.

"Information on all the areas should be made available so people know in advance what is being considered."

An Ealing Council spokeswoman, said: "The works to implement the Saxon Drive CPZ was part of the extension of the wider West Acton CPZ and was due to go live in July 2010.

"Despite this road being due for resurfacing this autumn, the council was concerned that if it left Saxon Drive out of the CPZ even for a few months it would cause severe parking disruption and so decided in resident’s best interests to pay the additional £300 cost to repaint lines.

"Unfortunately a number of delays held up the works to introduce the CPZ and the period between the different sets of work was much shorter than originally envisaged. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.
