Today I am asking for the help of each and every reader of the Harrow Observer to make London a better and safer city.

Since the Mayoral election my greatest priority has been addressing the serious youth violence that has led to the horrific murders of 28 teenagers in the capital so far this year.

Of course we need to be tough on any kind of criminal activity, and there is no substitute for strong policing solutions. But we also need to recognise that there are huge opportunities to help these youngsters, before their lives go irretrievably wrong.

I have now launched a plan to tackle the complex long-term root causes of teenage violence,Time For Action.

Its key themes are: 1 Giving young offenders in prison a chance to develop a career other than professional criminality. 2 More coordinated and assertive effort on school truancy. 3 Action to better support children in care. 4 Working with organisations like the Scouts, Girl Guides and Police Cadets to build character and self-respect. 5 More sporting activities and opportunities for young people.

I want to hear your views. Please send me your ideas and suggestions by December 16.

If you want to view Time for Action online and take part in the consultation, you can visit www.london.gov.uk/mayor/crime/ timeforaction.
