A call for volunteers to help care for the Grand Union Canal this year has been made by the Canal and River Trust.

Residents are being encouraged to work-off their festive excess by helping to protect some of the most important heritage and wildlife habitats along the waterway.

The Canal and River Trust which is the charity that looks after the canal, is looking for people who can help with its Towpath Taskforce team in Southall (starting at Norwood Top Lock, Havelock Road) on Tuesday January 20, from 10am – 3pm.

The group meets on the third week of every month and encourages people to come out and get their hands dirty.

Projects can include litter picking, painting, towpath maintenance, repairs to listed structures, creating wildlife habitats and tree planting. No special skills are required and refreshments are provided.

Debbie Viddler, volunteer leader for the Canal and River Trust, said: “Many local people use the canal for walking, fishing or boating – it’s a great chance to enjoy some time outside. Together with our volunteers we work hard to keep it in the condition it deserves, as well as improving it further in the future, and it would be great to get more local people to join our dedicated Taskforce.

“Volunteering is a great way to meet other people, learn new skills and find out more about the wildlife, history and day-to-day happenings along the canal. Volunteers don’t need to have any experience, they just need to be willing to get stuck in. And the more people that join us, the more work we can do.”
