The consistent failure of Ealing Council to pay its invoices on time is not only a huge embarrassment, it could put businesses at risk unnecessarily.

Blaming a problem which has dragged on for months on issues with an overworked server is simply not good enough. An alternative has to be found if the system does not work.

At a time in which everyone recognises the importance of keeping struggling traders afloat, the council seems to be shirking its own responsibility to support the local economy. Let's hope things quickly improve.

Pay their fare

DISABLED and elderly people face challenges every day, from a lack of access to shops to getting out and about in town.

But the majority want the independence to travel alone and get on with their lives.

The Capital Call Scheme, which gives members £200 to spend on private vehicle hire, will be removed once the number of black taxis in the area increases.

A separate scheme offers cash to spend on black cabs, but most of those are in central Ealing, and people on the outskirts will be left without a vital transport link.

More money should be ploughed into transport schemes for the elderly and disabled to give them the independence they need.
