Finally, we have received an apology from Ealing Council over the box junction fiasco and a promise to pay back the illegal fines from late June.

This is an issue which has rumbled on for months, and both the Gazette and local councillor Bassam Mahfouz have campaigned to get the cash back for motorists.

However, we must particularly congratulate Jim Douglas, who specialises in helping people unfairly penalised for motoring offences. He obtained the crucial piece of information which led to the apology from Councillor Phil Taylor on behalf of the council and the cash back pledge.

However, we suggest the council as an act of goodwill now refunds everyone for venturing into those six box junctions - not just those from late June.

The human cost

BEHIND every shooting or knifing there is a real human cost to consider.

The murder of Jason Johnson last Friday has left a three-year-old fatherless. And the family's moving poetic tribute is particularly poignant as it echoes a tribute from the son to his dad. So far, we don't know the motive behind this pointless murder which left a young and popular man dead in a dirty and overgrown alley.

Let's hope the person or persons responsible are now quickly bought to justice.
