MORE than 300 people visited Hanwell Locks as part of a project to raise awareness of how the site works and its history.
The Canal and River Trust was behind the initiative, called Hidden History, as more than £50million of renovation work takes place at waterways across the country.
More than 350 visitors were at the lock on Sunday and were allowed deep into the main lock chamber, where they were given the opportunity to learn about the complex works required to keep the facility operational.
Visitors were also able to find out more about the breadth of expertise and skills needed to undertake the work and quiz Trust experts.
Earlier this month, two 3-ton gates were lifted into Hanwell Locks as part of improvement works.
Jon Guest, London waterway manager, said: "It was fantastic to see so many people support the Canal and River Trust and show an interest in their local waterway.
"We hope that by showcasing the repair works, we can give people a chance to see the scale of the work we do to ensure that the waterways are preserved for today’s visitors and future generations."
