Hounslow mayor Sachin Gupta clenched his fists in delight as he hit the bar in a crossbar challenge today at Brentford FC's Osterley training ground.

Mr Gupta struck the bar with one of his five attempts during the contest, organised to promote a responsible drinking campaign ahead of the World Cup.

He lost out to Brentford FC midfielder Joe Maloney, who succeeded with two out of his five efforts.

Superintendent Sally Benatar, of Hounslow Police, failed to hit the bar once despite going close after gamely agreeing to stand in for borough commander Paul McGregor, who was otherwise engaged.

The event was held to encourage people to drink responsibly when watching the World Cup this summer.

Hounslow Police will have up to 25 extra officers on patrol on days when England are playing, after violent crime in the borough soared by a third during the 2010 World Cup.
