More than 300 potentially lethal gas cylinders that can explode into huge fireballs if accidentally heated up have been lying around in people's sheds and garages.

The scale of the danger was revealed thanks to a four-week amnesty during June that saw hundreds of residents handing in their unwanted cylinders at SpaceWaye, Hounslow Council's recycling centre.

The cylinders - which have a range of domestic and commercial uses - put lives at risk and cause widespread disruption because they can become explosive when heated during fires.

Their presence during a blaze means surrounding roads must be sealed off and nearby homes evacuated.

The amnesty was called after the Arson Cycle Force - a group of firefighters who patrol the borough on bike - spotted a number of abandoned cylinders on their rounds.

Borough commander of Hounslow's fire brigade, Phil Butler, thanked resident for their support during the amnesty, and Cllr Phil Andrews, Hounslow's lead member for community safety, added: "This amnesty gave us an opportunity to drum home how dangerous cylinders are, and how important it is that they are disposed of safely.

"From the vast range of cylinders handed in, there was a clear need for an amnesty like this and we are pleased it was so well supported."

Residents can still dispose of gas cylinders at SpaceWaye, in North Feltham Trading Estate, Pier Road, Feltham. There is no charge for domestic users but trade drop-off costs £150 per tonne.
