UXBRIDGE college has welcomed news there will be a £1-billion investment in work and training placements for young people.

The national youth contract scheme will give employers subsidies worth £2,275 to take on 18 to 24-year-olds for six months and £1,500 subsidy for small businesses to take on 16 to 18-year-olds as long as they have been on Job Seeker’s Allowance for at least nine months.

We reported last week that despite record youth unemployment, Hillingdon was one of six local authorities to increase overall employment over the last year.

Lorraine Collins, executive director of enterprise and development at Uxbridge College, told the Gazette: “We are pleased that the youth contract programme is going to be given a government subsidy, which will give employers the opportunity to take more young people on.”
