A graphic design student from Uxbridge College has won a national competition to create a new livery for a worldwide logistics company.

Steven O’Neil’s design was chosen over more than 180 others and Hellmann Worldwide Logistics UK has now used it on one of its trailers.

The 18-year-old also won a new laptop, a £100 retail voucher, a Hellmann goody bag and a reference from the firm to put on his CV.

Steven, of Morello Avenue, Uxbridge, said: “It was a great achievement for me to win the national competition and it gave me such a big self-confidence boost as a student and upcoming graphic designer.

“The process took a number of weeks from start to finish, a lot of which involved research into Hellmann Worldwide Logistics and its competitors in the market.

“I found a way of incorporating Hellmann's iconic geese symbol into a design that represents movement, standing out on the side of its road freight vehicle, and it was amazing to see my design on the trailer.”

On top of Steven's prizes, the company gave Uxbridge College £1,500 worth of vouchers for graphic design equipment and software.

Shernette Daly, graphic design lecturer at the college in Park Road, said: “It is really exciting to see Steven’s design appearing on a Hellmann Worldwide Logistics lorry.

“With so many educational institutions in the competition, the results are a real triumph for the college, particularly as two other students, Calyne Domhani and Keenan Sutherland, were chosen as runners-up.

“The competition provided an opportunity and experience for the students to create a professional piece to a live brief.

“Steven’s is a striking design which will stand out from its competitors and I will definitely be keeping my eyes open on the motorway.”

The competition was fought by graphic design and art students from across the UK who were completing their A or AS Levels or equivalent qualifications.

After the entries were whittled down to the top ten, Hellmann UK’s board of directors selected the winning design.

Commercial director Matthew Marriott said: “We were all very impressed with the creativity and flair of Steven’s design and think it looks fantastic brought to life on the vehicle.

“This competition was a great way for us to engage with the community and allow students to get creative whilst learning about the logistics industry. I was thrilled with how many entries came in and how young people interpreted the brand in different and interesting ways.”
