A SUBWAY where a woman was robbed in a brutal attack last year is to be improved in a bid to make it safer for the people who use it.

The area, in Carlyon Road, Hayes, was earmarked for development by Transport for London after Valerie Dancer, who was 63 at the time of the incident in November 2008, was attacked and robbed of her purse and mobile phone as she walked home after visiting friends in the area. The vicious attack left her critically ill in hospital with severe head injuries. An efit was issued after the incident but her assailant was never caught.

A report was drawn up, suggesting improvements to the area that would address safety concerns. These recommendations have now been approved.

Some improvements have already been acted on.

Others to be implemented include the installation of more lighting and CCTV cameras on the approach to the subway; the cutting back and maintenance of shrubbery on the slopes leading to the underpass to deter people from using the bushes as some-where to hide; and the installation of fencing and convex mirrors, which will improve the view to the subway.

Councillor Mary O'Connor, of Charville ward, said the regeneration of the area has been a priority.

"It is quite an unpleasant place to be and these improvements have been needed for some time," she said.

"It's quite a congested area that forms part of a lot of people's daily journeys, and the changes will make a big difference to their lives."

Councillor Sid Garg, who represents Yeading ward, said the new plans would help to make members of the public feel safer.

"This was a horrific crime that took place in broad daylight, and any measures taken to prevent such a thing happening again are welcomed," he said.

"It is certainly a step in the right direction."
