Around 300 addresses were evacuated on Thursday afternoon (May 21) when builders working at a site in Empire Way, Wembley, unearthed a unexploded WW2 bomb.

  • Road closures and a police cordon were put in place and stayed in force for almost 24 hours.
  • The bomb was removed by bomb disposal experts - to be moved and detonated elsewhere - and the cordons were lifted at 2.30pm on Friday (May 22).
  • Wembley Stadium said the incident would not affect the play-offs on Saturday.
  • It is thought the bomb - a Sprengbombe-Cylindrisch general purpose German bomb - was dropped over London during Nazi raids in the early 1940s and has lain undisturbed for 70 years.
