Nearly two thirds of those attending diabetes roadshows in Hounslow were found to be at risk of developing the condition, it has emerged.

A total of 481 people were given check-ups at a series of events organised by Diabetes UK across the borough last month.

Of those, 316 were referred to their doctors for further tests and support because they were believed to have Type 2 diabetes or be at risk of developing the disorder.

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition which can lead to serious complications, including heart disease, blindness or diabetes.

But most people are able to manage the disorder and lead long and healthy lives by eating well, exercising and in some cases taking medication. Leading a healthier lifestyle also reduces the risk of developing the condition.

Roz Rosenblatt, London regional manager for Diabetes UK, said the figures from the Hounslow roadshows, held between May 18 and 23, showed how important it was to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet.

"It's obviously very worrying that so many people in Hounslow have been identified as at moderate or high risk of Type 2 diabetes, particularly as there are already 14,261 people diagnosed with the condition in the borough," she added.

"But our roadshow has given them a chance to get help from their doctors and hopefully to take a serious look at their health.

"Being overweight is one of the main risk factors of Type 2 diabetes but it’s not the only one. Some people will be at risk of the condition because of their age, ethnicity or family history. But weight is the one thing you can do something about.

"So whether you have other risk factors or not, it is a smart move to look closely at your lifestyle habits and do all you can to keep at a healthy weight, eat well and be physically active. Even small changes can make a big difference."

Harjinder Singh, a 46-year-old trustee of the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, in Hanworth Road, Hounslow, was among those diagnosed with the condition during a roadshow at the temple. He was referred to his GP for tests and given advice on healthy eating and exercise.

"My dad had Type 2 diabetes for 20 years and so as a family we learned our lesson from that. I am very careful about eating healthily and exercising regularly and hopefully I will be able to avoid it," he said.
