Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a much-loved grandfather as he left a Notting Hill bar.

A 38-year-old man voluntarily went to a south London police station today where he was arrested on suspicion of murdering Anthony ‘Tony’ Charlery, of Earls Court Road, Kensington, who died in Portobello Road just before 1am on Saturday (August 30) after he was stabbed in the neck.

It has also emerged a 21-year-old man was arrested yesterday (September 3) on the same charges and the pair both remain in custody.

A music promoter and much-loved family man, 59-year-old Mr Charlery, had briefly visited the popular Mau Mau bar for a chat with a friend and was attacked and knifed in the throat outside as he tried to run away from his attackers.

The investigation led by Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall is still ongoing.

She said: “On Friday, 29 August, Tony went alone to the Mau Mau bar in Portobello Road W11. He was only inside the venue for a short while and was stabbed as he left. Tony received the fatal wound as he tried to run away from his attackers.

“I appeal to anyone who knows the identity of the persons involved to call detectives. Tony was a local man and a much loved grandfather. His family are devastated by his death in such a brutal way.

“As I believe the two suspects to be local men, I especially appeal to the Notting Hill community for help.”

Police are still asking for witnesses or anybody with information regarding the murder to call them on 020 8785 8963 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
